Character Design  / Bacherlor of Design in Creative Media

Week 9:

At the beginning, I didn’t have a clear idea of how to approach the composition. After studying the works of other artists, I tried to follow their examples and sketched out a few compositions. However, due to the limitations of my own thinking, I still kept the pose I had originally chosen.

After consulting with Mr. Fitri, I realized that I shouldn’t limit the composition to simply placing the character in front of a background. Instead, the character and the environment should be integrated as a whole. Personally, I am drawn to visuals with stronger tension and impact, but because I lack confidence in drawing complex human anatomy, I decided to place the emphasis of the dramatic perspective on the surrounding architecture rather than the character’s body.

After seeking advice from Mr. Fitri, I eventually decided on this composition. However, I went through several revisions when adjusting the character’s pose. The initial pose appeared slightly too feminine, so I made changes to better suit the character. In the end, I settled on a more stable and grounded standing pose that felt more appropriate for Veyrion’s personality.

Week 10-11:

During the coloring and refinement stage, I focused on unifying the overall color palette and enhancing the mood of the illustration. I chose cool-toned colors to reinforce the character’s calm and restrained personality, while also helping him visually blend into the urban night environment.

At the same time, I refined the lighting and shadows to improve depth and clarity, especially around the character’s silhouette and key costume details. For the background, I used stronger perspective and color contrast to increase visual tension, allowing the environment to support the composition without overpowering the character. This stage helped bring the illustration together and made the final image feel more cohesive and complete.

Reflection:

I have always struggled with environment and background drawing, so at the beginning of this project, I felt completely lost. However, as the process went on, I gradually began to understand some basic principles of composition. While studying references from other artists, I started paying more attention to how shapes are constructed within an image, rather than focusing only on details.

I realised that by using simple shapes to block out the overall structure and visual effect first, my ideas became more organised and easier to develop. This approach also helped my thinking process flow more smoothly throughout the design stage. Overall, this was a completely new experience for me. Although it was challenging, it was also highly rewarding. This attempt greatly improved my understanding of composition and gave me more confidence in creating scenes, which I believe will benefit my future work.
