For this project, I transformed the infographic poster from Project 1 into a vector animation created using Adobe After Effects. Before production began in earnest, Zihan drew up a storyboard to plan the sequence, duration and animation style of each frame.
Separate the required assets into individual layers
The animation begins with a display of the ingredients. This section primarily serves to present all the ingredients clearly, allowing the audience to understand the basic components of the dish; this shot lasts approximately 5–6 seconds.
Next comes the process of pan-frying the pork ribs and making the tomato sauce. I used simple positional movements and subtle rotational animations to depict the ingredients being added to the pan, making the process more intuitive and easy to follow.
In the middle section, I focused on the preparation steps, including making the filling and the dough. For the dough-making part, I added an animation of the rolling pin in motion and used a mask to show the dough being rolled out, making the scene more vivid.
This is followed by the process of placing the filling on the dough and cutting it into ravioli.
I then attached puppet pins to the sauce elements and dragged them out to depict the tomato sauce being poured over the finished dish, guiding the viewer’s visual attention.
Finally, I used mask animations for transitions and background effects to showcase the finished dish as the conclusion, ensuring the audience could clearly see the final result.
Throughout the animation, I largely adhered to the timing specified in the storyboard, keeping each frame between 4 and 6 seconds. At the same time, I endeavoured to use simple and consistent animation techniques to ensure the entire process was clear and easy to follow. This project has given me a better understanding of how to transform static design into dynamic presentation whilst maintaining clear communication of the information.
FINAL OUTCOME:
Project 3: Animation
Through this exercise, I have become much more familiar with After
Effects. Although I had never attempted this kind of animation production
before, having built up some experience from previous similar projects
meant that I wasn’t starting completely from scratch when working on Task
3; I was able to draw on some of the techniques I’d learnt previously to
enhance the animation.
When we first drew the storyboards and rough animations, we did not fully
understand what was required, so the results were rather slapdash. It was
only after discussing this with the tutor that we realised our
shortcomings. Consequently, we reworked the pacing of the video and mapped
out a timeline, which undoubtedly gave us a much clearer sense of the
video’s rhythm.
All in all, this was a rare and valuable experience. Having become more
familiar with After Effects, I am now looking forward to future modules
and any courses where I might use it.
