Project 1: Infographics poster
Step 1 :
First, we need to choose a video we’d like to make from the Pasta Grannies YouTube channel. I’ve chosen ‘TRADITIONAL PUGLIA BREAD’.
Step 2 :
A rough sketch of the poster layout.
I initially created the first draft using Canva, but following Mr Kannan’s advice, I realised that the visuals on this information poster weren’t striking enough and the layout was too text-heavy.So I redrew the composition.
First, I roughly laid out the text based on the composition I had in mind.
However, I felt the bottom looked a bit empty, so I added a semi-circular gradient to the background to add more depth to the lower section.
Once the first draft was complete, I sought advice from Mr Kannan. He felt that the visual flow of my poster was unclear and that the bottom section still looked a bit empty. He suggested I rethink the layout and the visual flow of the text, as well as changing the typeface and adjusting the typesetting.
So I went back and changed the font, rearranged some of the text and images to create a more fluid visual flow, and drew guide lines to help me align the elements on the poster more neatly.
Whilst creating this poster, I became much more proficient in using Adobe Illustrator. Through constant trial and error, I gradually mastered the use of some common tools, such as the drawing tools, alignment tools and text layout features. This practical experience enabled me to produce visual elements more efficiently during the design process, whilst also giving me a deeper understanding of how to operate the design software.
Furthermore, whilst creating the poster, I learnt some fundamental principles of information visualisation regarding typography and layout. For instance, how to arrange text and graphics in a logical manner, how to use hierarchical relationships to make information clearer, and how to utilise colour and shape to highlight key content. These design methods helped me realise that a good information visualisation poster requires not only aesthetically pleasing visuals, but more importantly, the ability to convey information clearly and effectively.
Through this assignment, I have gained a clearer understanding of information visualisation design and realised that design is not merely a decorative expression, but rather requires striking a balance between aesthetic appeal and the communication of information. The entire production process has been immensely beneficial, enhancing both my design thinking and software skills. I believe these experiences will prove invaluable to my future design studies and practical projects.
