Experience
Throughout the course of this module, I have developed an understanding of typography as a multi-dimensional discipline that combines creativity and technology. In Task 1, I attempted to take inspiration from natural textures and transform them into abstract glyphs, while Task 2 allowed me to explore how to convey emotion and dynamics through type, and to establish my own personal typographic style. In Task 3, I challenged myself to build a complete typeface system - adopting a cut metal style design language. With the dot matrix system, I used sharp corners, geometric cuts and hard structures to create an industrial, mechanical visual style. This process also gave me a deeper understanding of how typefaces can express a sense of materiality, weight and production process.
Observation
Throughout the design process, I repeatedly realised that even expressive typefaces must maintain structural clarity and visual balance. Cut metal styles naturally have strong angles and contrasts, but I had to be careful with line thickness, spacing and structural proportions to ensure that each letter had both character and legibility. At the same time, I have observed the importance of contrast in typefaces - whether it is the black and white space, the rhythm of thickness, or the relationship between solidity and white space, all of these have a direct impact on the tension and rhythm conveyed by the typeface.
Findings
Through three different tasks, I have come to realise that typography is not just about ‘making words’, but also about building a visual system that is full of logic and emotion. In Task 1, I experienced the possibilities of ‘abstract modelling’; in Task 2, I learnt to use type to tell a personal narrative; and in Task 3, I gained a deeper understanding of how to build a complete typographic system that is expressive and applicable to a wide range of mediums and scenarios. These three paths have helped me to develop a more holistic view of design, learning to combine ‘intuition’ and ‘structure’, “emotion” and ‘reason’ in my work. I have learnt to combine ‘intuition’ with ‘structure’, “emotion” with ‘rationality’ in my creations.
Acknowledgement
I am very grateful to Mr Vinod for his detailed guidance and professional feedback throughout the semester. He not only provided clear directions on technical aspects, but also encouraged me to think deeply about my work from various perspectives, from structural logic, visual rhythm to media adaptation. Through this course, I have not only acquired new skills, but also laid the foundation for my future career in entertainment design.
